I decided to follow Allison’s good example and give a shout out before I do my audit next weekend. I’ve even stolen her wording (sorry, Allison)!

Due to EOFY and a move I have been rather lax in auditing my fandom (TV A-K). While starting an audit today, I noticed quite a lot of the muses under my watch are just as behind as I have been. So rather than do one big hack and slash and spend all day writing up warning emails and removing third strikes, I've decided to post up a warning here first. I will wait until next weekend to warn and remove the delinquent muses in my fandoms, so if you are one of mine, and haven't had a chance to answer a prompt in a while, now is the time. Consider this a free pass until Saturday (July 25).

Make sure you've answered at least one of the last 4 prompts (289, 290, 291 or 292 by next Saturday) and you'll be fine.

Any outstanding applications or emails will also be addressed by then – so please don’t resend these until Monday next week. I’m about to hit that correspondence today and you’ll definitely have a response by next Monday.

Thank you!

"We'll be late," the Doctor called through the bedroom door. He gave it a rap and got a disgruntled grunt of affirmation in reply.

River Song was not one who often spent time dressing up. More often than not, the Doctor would arrive on her world for a visit and find her still in the dusty clothes she'd been at the architectural dig in, leaning over some artifact and incorrectly guessing what it was. He often said it was "endearing", if a little dirty.

But tonight, no, tonight was a special night. Tonight, River emerged from the bedroom in a floor-length dark red opera dress with her hair piled on the top of her head.

"Are you sure this counts as an anniversary?" she asked. She stepped forward and straightened the tie on his new suit.

On the best of days, the Doctor was not a romantic. On the worst of days he would wax on about how very much he hated the idea of domesticity and with romance came the domestics. But sometimes, on very special occasions, he would do something like this.

"Well, we're hardly on the same timeline, are we?" he replied.

"That's never made you want to celebrate an anniversary before," she said, crossing her arms.

"And when was the last time I took you to dinner? Besides, you'll love it. Berrillum food is unlike any other world. Slices of light cut into pasta and sprinkled with Vercasian sugars." He smiled widely and, as it often did whenever he visited while he was older, it didn't quite reach his eyes.

River nodded, and then passed him to put a note on the plate of hot tea and lemon biscuits she'd left for her usual Saturday visitor. Jenny, the Doctor's daughter, had visited often, occasionally making River's home her port of call. The Doctor hadn't mustered up the courage to speak to her. Not yet. But he would. River would convince him, someday, and they'd be a proper family, him and Jenny.

Out with your Dad for dinner. It's our anniversary, apparently. I'll bring you something back from Berillium. -R She placed the note delicately next to the ceramic teapot and picked up her handbag and journal before heading towards the TARDIS.

"If our anniversary only comes when I finish a journal," she said, "Then it's not quite our anniversary. I've got a page left."

"You can put tonight into it," he said. For a moment, the Doctor looked unbelievably sad. Sadder than she'd ever seen him. "Dinner and the Singing Towers. It'll be perfect."

"Perfect?" she asked, curious but not wanting to pry. "Willing to bet your life on that?"

He smiled then, small and tight. "Always."

The weeks after Jonathan’s death are about the children. She doesn’t have time to notice or think about the fact that he’s gone. She hasn't stopped long enough to realize she’s alone. Every second goes into planning the funeral, getting things in order, consoling everyone else. People show up at the farm with flowers and tuna casseroles, taking her hand and telling her what a good man her husband was. She can only smile and thank them, but in her head all she can think is, “…was?”

After the funeral, there’s nothing left. Nothing to organize, no one to console, nothing to do but turn to the empty side of the bed and stare. And wait to feel it. She knows it’ll knock her out and drag her off, and when it finally does, she loses days. Time passes and she can’t remember the date. She’s hard-pressed to remember the season. But there’s snow on the ground, and there’s reality in it. She just wishes it would melt.

It does, finally, and she’s back to making breakfast and sewing loose buttons. She focuses her energy on the kids, trying to convince Clark it wasn’t his fault, and telling Grace at every turn how much her father loved her. They don’t ask how she is. Nor do they wonder.

At night, she’s alone. She doesn’t sleep. The solitude keeps her awake, and the quiet does nothing but invite hours of thought. She stays up all night, every night, remembering what she wore the day they met, the way his hands were shaking as he proposed, and how he always got dressed socks first. Her eyes are bloodshot every morning because she spends her nights remembering every detail. Every second of nearly three decades together. The kids don’t notice.

“Take someone out”? Who do you think I am, Sam Spade?

It’s ironic that I ended up as a detective. Teachers usually don’t, at least, they don’t in fiction. I’ve read about all kinds of detectives, from Rabbis to old maids, but never a primary school teacher. Being a detective in LA is violent, all right, but that used to be more Angel’s side of the business. He liked it.

(The truth is that violence never was my style, not even when I was trying to throw my life away with a vague kind of idea that I deserved it, that I must deserve it or it wouldn’t have happened to me.

When I was a kid I used to go to confession, and I think I remember how I felt afterward. As if I was – almost invulnerable. I remember that a car just missed me, once, when I was on the way back from church. I was thinking that if I died I’d go straight to Heaven, as pure as rainwater. [Rainwater was pure back then; well, we thought it was.] How did I get onto that?)

By the time I joined Angel Investigations I didn’t really want to get involved. I tried to deliver the message from the Powers and be on my way, at the start. I suppose I didn’t take much persuading to hang about, though. I don’t know whether I would have stuck around, but then Cordy joined…

It’s funny, I can’t really remember taking anyone out on a date, either. I was married at 18 and then I was separated. I didn’t even know if I was divorced or not.

Written down like this, it doesn’t seem much of a life.

One of the quirks of traveling with the Doctor is that you never know quite where you’re going to land. It’s one of the many variables that adds excitement, that influx of adrenaline when you step outside the TARDIS and realize that anything, anything at all, could happen.

“I don’t know how the hell you got a license to drive that thing.”

The Doctor sucks in a breath sharply and blows it out in the general direction of her traveling companion; it momentarily freezes in the icy air drifting through the open TARDIS door. Outside, the wasteland of frozen ground and gray-white sky makes for a bleak sight. “I could always let you have the controls next time, if you think you could do better.”

Bones slips a heavily insulated jacket over his blue medical tunic and smirks at her. “Far be it from me to contradict a lady.”

“Of course n–“

She cuts off in the middle of her retort, abruptly diving for the floor of the TARDIS. Bones crosses his arms, having recently decided he refuses to be startled by her random moments of distraction anymore. Too much potential for attention whiplash. “What is it?”

She waves a couple pair of shoes in the air with all the triumph of the Olympic torch-bearer. “Ice-skating!”

Refusing to be startled, however, is not the same as being immune to becoming completely flabbergasted. “What?”

The Doctor has already begun tugging off her left boot, pausing in her task only long enough to toss a set of ice skates to Bones. He catches the pair reflexively, coming within an inch of slicing his hand on the energy blades. “There’s miles of ice out there. Haven’t you ever been skating?”

“Well, no,” he admits, “not for a long– “

Their target was lying sprawled out across the living room floor completely unaware of his impending doom. Henry and Peter were in the hallway on their stomachs, dragging themselves along on their elbows. Okay so Henry was crawling really but he was three, Peter figured it was allowed. Right now, Peter had Sasha’s hand mirror poked around the doorframe, target in sight.

“Okay, when I say go, we belly crawl toward him. I’ll pin him down, you can shoot him.”

"Here are your menus; I'll be back in a little bit to take your order."

"Thanks." Maggie smiled at the waitress before the blonde woman walked off. As she looked over her menu she said, "Go ahead and order whatever you want; I'm paying today."

"Okay. Thanks, Maggie." Jimmy peeked around the edge of his menu and grinned at his sister before going back and reading what was on the list.

Maggie grinned. It had been a long time since she had done anything with her younger brother; too long, in fact. She hated feeling like she was neglecting him even though they didn't live in the same house anymore. So, Maggie had planned a lunch date for just the two of them. She dropped Inga off at her parents' house for the afternoon, picked Jimmy up from his home and then drove the two of them to Ike's.

"So how's work going?" she asked, setting her menu down.

"Fine," was the response from behind Jimmy's menu. "I might get more hours soon."

"Hey, great!" Maggie may have said more, but the waitress returned to their table at that moment.

"Okay, we ready to order?" she asked.

Maggie nodded. "I'll have the veggie burger, with lettuce, tomato and pickles, and a raspberry tea."

"Cheeseburger," Jimmy chimed in. When the waitress asked what he wanted on it he grinned and answered, "Onions, pickles, and tomato. And a Coke." Maggie said nothing, but shot her brother a quick Look. "Please," Jimmy added, smiling.

"Sure thing," said the waitress as she finished jotting their order down. "I'll be right back with your drinks."

As the waitress walked away from the table, Jimmy leaned forward across the table and gestured to his sister to do the same. "She's cute," he whispered. "You should ask her out."

Maggie snickered. That was her brother, Jimmy the matchmaker.

I suppose this may sound a frivolous thing to want, something not befitting of a monk who has taken vows of chastity, poverty and obedience – but I occasionally wonder what it would be like to take Manuel Aringarosa, the man who saved me and who has been my beloved mentor for so many wonderful years – out shopping.

Yes, shopping. A simple day spent in his company, just wandering around the city together and purchasing things. It matters not what we’d buy – perhaps some items for donating to one of the many Catholic church charities. Or food for some special occasion – but it’s the experience of being with my mentor like that and just doing these things that I truly crave. Walking slowly with him, taking in the sights and talking… it would be a relaxing and almost blissful few hours.

I hope that I’m not being too much of a sinner for wanting this.

I remember when I was a very tiny boy, and I was eager to explore but not quite courageous enough to do it on my own. I can recall rushing up to Mommy and tugging at her hand, strong for my very young age, and leading her outside into – a garden, I think? Our garden?

She was very happy to be outside with me, and smiled and laughed at the beauty of it all. There were birds and butterflies and flowers – I think it was summer or late spring. We walked in that garden, along the path, hand in hand. It was a warm day, and Mommy’s hand was warm in mine, and her voice was full of delight as she pointed out many pretty things for me to look at. Such a wonderful, wonderful time – I never wanted it to end.

I think Heaven must be exactly like that garden. That day there with Mommy was one of the few truly happy moments of my life.

About this Entry
[info]yes_peacocks, posting in [info]theatrical_muse
Lucius Malfoy has never cared much for redemption.

He never went looking for it like some but he imagines if you seek it; like most things it becomes harder to find, to make real. He knows very little about matters of the soul; right and wrongs, redemption and damnation and what does it matter to a man like him? Lucius is clever, but not intelligent. If the condition of his soul is called into question, he’s just as likely to ignore as he is to smile and tease you. If he wants something, he gets it by craft or purchase. He has never wanted for anything. He has never needed to.

He has known fear of course, and well. He can tell exactly how it feels to be stripped of everything that belongs to you; from your name to your dignity and sense of purpose. He’s even known strength because he can tell how it feels to have someone entirely at your mercy, and then cast them aside to be as meaningless as they are. He has seen things that would haunt you, and excite you; from flying broomsticks to the monsters even the Muggle children know to fear without being told.

He has killed. But that was long ago.

Now, the only thing that stirs him from his slumber is a squalling child and like they did with Draco before him, he and Narcissa will play Rochambeau to decide who tends to him. He often loses.

He gets up, making his way through his centuries old home to find his new grandson and cradle the child close to his chest. The song he’ll sing will be soft and simple; something given to him when he was that small and when pacified, he’ll tuck Scorpius back into bed and return to his own.

His thoughts are simple and matters of soul decades behind him.

He's known her since she was eleven. She was a feisty little thing, quick with a response, and ready for anything. Still is. Stronger than most girls her age, but that was never surprising. She wasn't wild about him at first. He couldn't blame her for that. All she could remember about him is how he tried to expose her brother years earlier and almost got them both killed. With time, she warmed up to him. They shared a love of candor and sarcasm, and both lacked any kind of filter. In a way, they saw themselves as kindred spirits.

With her mother being in DC so much of the time, and Clark being so busy saving Metropolis from various villains, Perry started coming around the farm more often. Candor and sarcasm aside, one thing they certainly had in common was that they both missed her mother desperately when she was gone. But neither of them was wild about admitting it. They'd sit around and watch old movies, commenting on Humphrey Bogart's "badassery" or Ava Gardner's magnetism. Perry would think about his son. But somehow being with Grace didn't make him miss Jerry. It just made him wonder how things might have been if Jerry had lived. Or if Alice hadn't cheated on him. Or if she'd never told him that Jerry was never his son to begin with. This little girl had been through hell, but she still reminded him of what a functional family could look produce.

Eight years later, he doesn't see as much of Grace as he used to, and never just the two of them. She's nineteen and busy as hell. He's...the same. Busy with work, and with her mother. But he catches an old Jimmy Stewart movie on AMC and sends her a text. Yes, a text. And whether she wants to be seen with her not-so-hip potential step-father or not, he insists on taking her out on her night off to celebrate her latest success on stage. Like a child, Martha is a disappointed that she wasn't invited, but the biggest part of her gets a warm, fuzzy feeling when she thinks of how well her daughter gets along with her fiance. She could never marry him otherwise.

This time Doyle read the question on the neatly printed card and didn’t even glance at his old laptop. After a moment’s hesitation he turned on the Dictaphone and started to talk.

“If you’re asking about me cheering someone up I should tell you straight away that Harry always said I’d got no talent for that, none at all. I used to think I could I do it. When my mother felt down I used to make her a cup of tea and maybe joke a bit. Then I might try to come home with a little present for her later, or paint the ceiling or something.

Now I think of it, I suppose I tried to treat Harry the same way. At least, I did at first; not so much later, when we were rowing all the time. Not after she threw the tea at the wall that time, anyway.

The truth is, though, that I’m probably better at doing something practical than trying to talk someone out of feeling depressed. It’s patronizing to jolly people along, and half the time it makes things worse. (At least, that’s what Harry said after she threw the tea.)

When Cordy had all that trouble with the cockroaches and then couldn’t find an apartment I didn’t tease her much. I just asked around and got her somewhere decent to stay.

I’m not saying it cheered her up right away, exactly, but it worked all right in the long run. At least, she seemed happy enough there later on.

Anyway, I’m pretty sure it cheered up Dennis.
